Images Of Prophet Muhammad (Peace And Blessings Upon Him)

According to Muslim belief, when God (in Arabic, "Allah") first created humankind He made a promise that he would never leave us without guidance. That guidance over the passage of time would take the form of Prophets, sent to human civilisation throughout its long and turbulent history at many varied times and places but all imparting the same essential teaching - a knowledge and love of God and a means by which we might live with one another in peace and justice. Muslims believe that there have been thousands of Prophets sent over the course of time, some of whose names are known but many more whose names have been lost.
Prophets therefore became more than mere spiritual guides, they became living proof of God's continued love and mercy for humankind. It is this pivotal role of the concept of prophethood in Islam which has given rise to a very real and profound sense of respect and reverence for prophetic figures in Muslim practice. Derogatory images of such figures are therefore seen as incredibly insulting and hurtful to Muslims. Which is not to say that there can not and should not be a questioning and open discussion of the teachings they profess, but rather that this should take place in an environment of mutual respect and consideration.
Muslims aversion to the portrayal of images of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in New Zealand and around the world, stems from the continuing emphasis Islamic belief, and Muslim civilisation, has sought to place on the message of Islam rather than the messenger. This not only applies to the Prophet Muhammad but also to the other 25 prophets specifically mentioned in the Qur'an such as Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus (may peace be upon them all). It is for this same reason that Muslims do not wish to be referred to as "Muhammadan", for as much as we may love the Prophet Muhammad, we have no desire to turn our prophets into gods and our worship remains for God alone.
Certainly it is part of Muslim belief that prophetic personalities have always been particularly illuminated souls guided by God and whose lives stand as exemplars of the heights to which the human spirit may ascend - not only for their deep love of God but for the way in which this love fostered a compassion for their fellow human beings. But the key to their role as guides, as a means of translating spiritual ideals into living realities, was is in their very humanity and this is a balance that Islam has always attempted to maintain - the balance between the love and respect we have for the Prophet Muhammad and our acknowledgment of the fact that he was only a man sent to teach us how to draw ever closer to God.
As such, much religious imagery is seen as detracting from the internal personality to instead focus on the external appearance of prophetic figures. Particularly in this time of ours when there is so much energy and attention spent on appearance over essence and style over substance, Muslims strive to retain the beauty and purity of the Divine message and the sublime personalities that have sought to exemplify it.
