FIANZ Eid Celebration At Parliament House 2006
Once again, FIANZ was delighted to celebrate Eid'ul Fitr at the Parliament House on 6 November 2006. This was the second time that Eid was celebrated at the Parliament.

The most important VIP guest for the evening was our Prime Minister, Rt Hon Helen Clark. Other VIPs included Hon Margaret Wilson, Speaker of the House, and the newly appointed High Commissioner for Pakistan, HE Munawar Saeed Bhatti. Other dignitaries namely HE K P Ernest, High Commissioner for India, HE Sheikh Kambiz Hassani, Ambassador of Iran and other diplomats; central and local government officials and community leaders were also in attendance at the august function.
Dr Ashraf Choudhary, Member of Parliament, was the Master of Ceremony for the evening.

The function began with a beautiful recitation of the Holy Qur'an, rendered by Sheikh Mohammad Airot, Imam of Ponsonby Masjid in Auckland.
Sister Nasreen Hanif, President of the Islamic Women's Council of New Zealand, read the English translation.

Javed Khan, President of FIANZ addressed the guests in which he spoke about the positive partnership between the Federation and the Government in promoting interfaith unity and harmony in New Zealand. He also emphasized on the point that the Kiwi Muslims are proud and determined to contribute towards the preservation of the multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-lingual society of New Zealand. Javed Khan said that the true spirit of Islam is to believe and practice peace. "While we should guard against any encouragement of fear, suspicion or hatred under the guise of religion, we must ensure that through our words and deeds, the message of peace and progress prevails".

The significance of the month of Ramadhan for Muslims was also reiterated in Javed Khan's speech. He also spoke about FIANZ as the Umbrella organisation which would endeavour its best to take the Muslim community of New Zealand forward and to develop the community that is religiously profound and socially progressive.
Javed Khan conveyed the appreciation by the Muslim community to the New Zealand Government and the wider community for their acknowledgement and recognition of the community.

In her address, Prime Minister Helen Clark expressed the appreciation of the Government for the work done by the Federation in looking after the Muslim community of New Zealand. In particular, she thanked the Federation for its positive collaborative involvement during the recent cartoon saga in New Zealand where the issue was tackled in a measured way which enhanced our reputation in the Muslim world.
She specifically mentioned the personal involvement of Javed Khan in the Interfaith Forum of the New Zealand Government, in particular he being the member of the official New Zealand Government representation at Interfaith Forum meetings overseas.

In this respect, the Prime Minister also mentioned that next year New Zealand will be hosting the Asia/Pacific Interfaith Forum in Waitangi for which she looks forward to the positive support of Federation.
HE Saeed Bhatti of the High Commission for Pakistan spoke largely about the significance of Ramadhan and Eid. He also reiterated that Islam stands for peace and unity among its adherents and the wider communities.
The event was once again endorsed as a resounding success for FIANZ. Everyone who attended the function thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was certainly a memorable event for many of us. It is indeed very heartening to note that the Government has now permanently penned the Eid Celebration in Parliament in its calendar of events.
