Dear Brothers and Sisters
Assalaam Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatahu.
We pray that this letter finds all of you in the very best of health and highest of Islamic spirits.
We have noted that in the past few days some Islamic organisations and individual members of our community have been circulating email messages calling the community to take part in an online poll seeking opinion about banning "face covering Muslim veils in New Zealand".
FIANZ has taken the matter seriously and verified the information with the relevant Government agency concerned. Following our request, the Office of Ethnic Affairs (OEA) has sent us the assurance as follows:
"The Office of Ethnic Affairs is concerned about a story that the New Zealand Government is running an online poll on Yahoo asking people's opinions about banning 'face-covering Muslim veils in NZ.' Please note that there is no connection between the New Zealand Government and this poll. The poll is an old one published by a media organisation."
Given the above explanation by the OEA, we request that all Local Associations/Trusts and individual members of the community should immediately refrain from circulating such unsupported and outdated information. Obviously, this will cause confusion and unhappiness in the community and we should avoid that.
