Clarification Of The Moon-Sighting For Ramadhan 1432H

The announcement for the start of Ramadhan has raised some concerns and questions in the community. To improve the understanding and the process, a few salient points are documented below.

The new moon was born on Sunday, 31 July, but because of its age at Maghrib time, the possibility of sighting on Sunday was considered negligible.

Announcement was made by the Hilal Committee to look for the moon on Monday, 1 August which corresponded with 29th Shabaan based on the start date of Shabaan 1432H

Although the Committee was concerned about the authenticity of the start date of Shabaan (which was based on no reports of sighting on the 29th Rejab 1432H), this could not be proven wrong until after the sighting of the moon for Ramadhan. .

On Sunday, 31 July four individuals from Auckland (who fulfilled all the requirements of the Shariah for giving testimony) gave "Shahadah" to have sighted the new moon. They were questioned and their claims scrutinised comprehensively by the Ulama. There was no reason to doubt their claims, particularly given the moon had already been born and there was a possibility (even though very slim) of sighting it.
The Hilal Committee, after careful consideration, made the decision that Monday 1 August would be 1st of Ramadhan.
It is fair to question the facts and the process but it is wrong to indulge in creating an atmosphere of tension and doubt. We urge people to accept this and move forward. People should refrain from making things worse for everybody.
Those who did not know in time and therefore missed the fasting of the first day can make up for it by fasting an extra day after Eid, Insha Allah, this will fulfil their religious requirement.
The month of Ramadhan is a very precious month. Please do your best to spend its time in extra worship to seek Allah's mercy and blessings in this blessed month and not indulge in unnecessary discussions that Islam teaches us to refrain from.
