Eid-Ul Fitr Celebration In New Zealand

The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand Inc. (FIANZ) is pleased to announce that the month-long fasting steadfastly observed by the Muslim community in New Zealand and Muslims all over the world will be ending soon with the celebration of Eid-ul Fitr. "Al-Fitr" literally means breaking of fast. Hence, Eid-ul Fitr is the festival of fast breaking.
Fasting during the Holy Month of Ramadhan (the ninth Islamic month) is of very special importance and has many spiritual and physical benefits. It is observed with all sanctity and reverence that it demands. Fasting also encourages us to have care and compassion with our fellow men. It inculcates patience, perseverance and everything good. Ramadhan is the time when Muslims - even as we continue with our daily routines - strive to become even better by strengthening our faith, carrying out more deeds of social responsibility and expressing gratitude to God.
Eid-ul Fitr is a day of joy and thanksgiving. On this day, Muslims show their joy and give thanks for their health, strength and opportunities of life which God has endowed them to fulfil their obligations during the month of Ramadhan.
The ceremony of Eid-ul Fitr starts early in the morning with a special Eid prayer at the Masjids attended by thousands of Muslims. After the prayer and short sermon by the religious leader, Muslims will greet each other seeking forgiveness and strengthening their friendship and bond.
Eid-ul Fitr falls on the first day of the Shawwal (the tenth Islamic month) following the month of Ramadhan. This will be confirmed by the sighting of the new moon. The Hilal Committee of the Federation will confirm the sighting of the new moon on Saturday, 13 November 2004. If the moon is sighted, then, Sunday, 14 November 2004, will be observed as the Eid-ul Fitr day in New Zealand.
In the event the new moon is not sighted on Saturday, 13 November 2004, then, Eid-ul Fitr will be observed on Monday, 15 November 2004.
