Eid-Ul Fitr Celebration In New Zealand

The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand Inc. (FIANZ) is pleased to announce that the month-long fasting steadfastly observed by the Muslim community in New Zealand will be ending either today or tomorrow (4th November) depending on the sighting of the new moon with the celebration of Eid-ul Fitr the following day.
For Muslims all over the world, the Holy Month of Ramadhan (the ninth month in the Islamic Calendar) is of very special importance. It is observed with all sanctity and reverence that it demands.
"Al-Fitr" literally means breaking of fast. Hence, Eid-ul Fitr is the festival of fast breaking. Eid-ul Fitr marks the end of Ramadhan. It is an occasion for "thanksgiving" and to seek "forgiveness" from Almighty God. It is definitely an occasion for the family and friends and the community as a whole to strengthen their friendship and bond.
On the day of the Eid-ul Fitr, all Muslims adorning their best costume stride in jubilant mood towards the Masjids and Prayer halls to attend the special Eid prayers. On this special day, every Masjid and Prayer hall in New Zealand overflows with thousands of Muslims (men and women; young and the old).
After the prayer, Muslims greet each other seeking forgiveness and strengthening their friendship and bond. Families and friends will visit each other to partake in the celebrations and the sumptuous food specially prepared for Eid.
Ramadhan symbolises understanding, tolerance and togetherness which are catalyst for peace and harmony. Muslims in New Zealand are determined to uphold and cherish these values to live in peace and harmony with the wider community. Religious harmony in our multi-racial multi-faith country is crucial for peaceful co-existence among the various ethnic communities.
Muslims share in the aspirations of all New Zealanders to strengthen our social fabric and cohesion to make New Zealand a stronger, healthier and a vibrant country to live and to proudly call it "Our Home".
On behalf of the Federation, I am delighted to extend my heartiest greetings to all Muslim brothers and sisters and indeed to the wider community of New Zealand on this auspicious occasion of Eid-ul Fitr. May the divine blessings of the Almighty light our lives and bestow our families with health, happiness, peace and prosperity.
