Understanding Spreads Through Engagement, Not By Burning The Source Of Knowledge

The attention of New Zealand Muslims has been drawn to a planned action in Gainesville, Florida where, on September 11 2010 Dove World Centre will hold an 'International Burn a Qur'an a Day' and inviting others to follow their footsteps in burning the holy book.
This extremist senselessness is historically associated with religious intolerance and persecution. Historical records indicate that the Nazis burned copies of the Jewish scripture during their violent anti-Semitist propaganda. Neither that experience nor the contemporary wind of active engagement predicated on a visible global multiculturalism would encourage the initiative at Dove World Centre.
Consequently, evangelical and community leaders as well as politicians like Hilary Clinton have come out to issue 'clear, unequivocal condemnation of this disrespectful, disgraceful act'.
We enjoy harmony and peace among all faith groups and communities in New Zealand. But we are also cognisant of the realities of modernity that have imposed enormous challenges to humanity today. For the era of globalization has meant that distant events have both the tendency and potential for ripple effects beyond their national boundaries because of the speed at which both information and humans travel beyond such borders.
Muslims in New Zealand and the world over are just coming out of a month long fasting, a period of abstinence but also of reflection and compassion. The end of Ramadan that is marked on 10th, 11th or 12th of September depending on one's geographical location is a time for celebration among Muslims in marking the end of Ramadan. By coincidence, this year it falls in the time of the anniversary of September 11 incidences where thousands lost their lives in New York. The Qur'an burners are also planning their despicable act within the same time.
FIANZ joins faith communities and world leaders in condemning the plan to burn the holy book and calls on the planners of such act to listen to majority voice and wisdom that understanding as essential ingredient for harmony can only spread through engagement, through knowledge and its dissemination and not by burning a source of knowledge like the Qur'an. In our desire to build on the existing harmony therefore, FIANZ would raise its engagement levels through more openness and wider dissemination of knowledge about Islam as enshrined in the Qur'an.
