The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand Inc. (FIANZ), the national Muslim umbrella organisation, co-hosted the 14th General Assembly of the Regional Islamic Da'wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) in Auckland from 26-30 November 2009. Sixty six delegates from the 14-member countries of RISEAP, Government officials, Non-Governmental representatives and members of the diplomatic and consular corps attended the General Assembly.
The General Assembly was graciously officiated by Hon Pansy Wong, Minister for Ethnic Affairs. The RISEAP catchment covers population of over 300 million Muslims in the region which import over 1 billion dollar of NZ primary products (meat and dairy products) annually. It was noted that close co-operation and dialogue between Muslims and other faith communities in the region is important for a peaceful co-existence of all communities living in the Asia Pacific region.

The President of RISEAP, YAB Pehin Sri Dr. Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is also the Chief Minister of Sarawak, delivered the keynote address at the opening ceremony on 28th November 2009. He encouraged participation of women and stressed on setting up of national charity fund "Baitulmal" within the member countries so that Muslim welfare can be financially supported within the region. He thanked the New Zealand Government for being proactive in working with New Zealand Muslim community.
The General Assembly of RISEAP was well coordinated and by all accounts, it was a marked success. Our aims and objectives have been achieved.
Most of the delegates attending the General Assembly were first time visitors to New Zealand and we took the opportunity to show our warm Kiwi hospitality and the vibrant multi-ethnic culture of New Zealand. The delegates really enjoyed their stay in New Zealand very much. We believe it would be a memorable event for them as much as it was for us.
