NZ Muslims Condemn the Taking of Innocent Lives in Nairobi, Kenya

The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand lnc. (FIANZ) and the Muslim community in New Zealand are shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of so many innocent lives at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
The principle of justice is central to Islam and Muslims are reminded never to act in an unjust way towards others. Muslims are taught to stand up firmly against injustice and to look at themselves first before they seek to criticise others.
To target civilians, to hold innocent men, women and children as hostages, to identify people to be killed on the basis of their faith - all of this is against Islamic teachings. Any act that targets and kills innocent people has to be condemned and FIANZ condemns the killings in Kenya unreservedly.
We live in a world in which lives are often taken far too casually. Those who have done nothing against others all too often become victims. In Nairobi these last few days have served up one more, sad example of blind violence. This was an act of cowardice and an act of profound injustice and no amount of excuses - whether to faith or as retaliation - can justify a crime such as this.
The Federation joins others across the world in extending its deepest sympathies and condolences to the Government of the Republic of Kenya and to the families of the victims of this horrific crime. We pray for the speedy recovery of all those injured in the ordeal and for strength for those families who are bereaved.
